Begonia Amphioxus is one of the most recognisable terrarium Begonias, as it has thin pointed leaves, and vibrant red spots. It's true that this species does LOVE humidity but having said that... it can grow as a houseplant (as long as the humidity is above 50% and you avoid putting it in direct sunlight!) As always, mature plants acclimate better to lower humidity, so if you can, grow the little one in high humidity until it gets too big!
I often hear people say they 'killed' this species... but I can guess why... you see this is a species with 'thin' stems that are susceptible to rot if placed in a dense soil mixture (which just happens to be what the mass produced plants you see in garden centres are in!) I sell amphioxus in a hybrid substrate (soil and akadama mix), and I will always recommend repotting this one into a mix with plenty of pumice/pon/perlite/akadama as well as soil to prevent stem rot.
Growing Conditions
- Terrarium or Houseplant
- Bright indirect light (NO direct sunlight recommended)
- Humid preferred
- To keep the leaves looking their best, allow it to dry in between watering, and then water thoroughly
All plants are home grown by me, propagated from my own collection, thus I can guarantee plants are pest and disease free.
Photos are indicative of the size and quality of the plant you will receive but not necessarily the exact plant, unless stated. Please do feel free to contact me if you do wish to select your plant before purchase.
Thanks,
